College girl killed, 14 injured in bus accident near Chennai

A 21-year-old college student was killed and 14 persons were injured when the bus they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned after colliding with a barricade, in the process of trying to avoid a two-wheeler.
The accident occurred on the Maduravoyal-Perungulathur Byepass Road, near Tiruneermalai on Saturday morning. S.Satyadarshini (21), a third year engineering student from Thuraiyur died on the spot, and the injured were taken to the Tamabaram Taluk Hospital at Chromepet and a private hospital in Tambaram. The victim was in the city for the past one month for a project work with an engineering college in Kattankulathur, according to one of the relatives, who arrived at the Chromepet GH to collect her body.
While many of them suffered minor injuries, three of them, including the bus conductor Jaishankar (45), Ganesamurthi (25) and Vetrivendhan (50) were referred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (GGH) for speciality treatment. Another passenger is being treated at the private hospital.
According to the police, the bus owned by Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, was travelling from Chennai to Salem when the driver Ranganathan (50) of Vellore district, reportedly lost control of the vehicle. They said the driver applied brakes to avoid hitting a two wheeler, and in the process, the bus swerved and fell sideways. It was slightly murky weather and drizzling, and road was slippery, when the accident happened, the driver of the bus told The Hindu. The accident disrupted the road traffic for more than two hours and finally traffic flow was restored around 1 p.m. after the wreckage was moved from the accident site.
